Matthew Rothschild & Chris Finan: Tranquility at any Price?
Friday, October 12  |  7:30 - 9:00 PM
Venue: Red Gym
Presenter(s): Matthew Rothschild, Chris Finan
In You Have No Rights, Matthew Rothschild, editor of The Progressive magazine, compiles chilling stories of ordinary Americans whose everyday liberties have been violated since September 11. Rothschild depicts a post-9/11 America hurtling itself into a repressive age. Through dozens of riveting and disturbing individual stories, You Have No Rights makes clear that America is now a country that may be both less safe and less free.
Free speech isn't free, according to Chris Finan, a historian and First Amendment activist, who describes the fight for free speech that began in the years after World War I and continues today as government secrecy and surveillance grows. His new book is From the Palmer Raids to the Patriot Act: A History of the Fight for Free Speech in America. Finan is the president of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, an organization that fights against censorship and surveillance.
