The Making of a Book: Writing, Editing, and Small Press Publication

Community Room 301

Snow Creek Press co-founder Jeremiah Lewis will discuss the long journey Snow Creek took publishing their first book, including writing Capernaum and how the book evolved from nearly 1,000 pages long to the lean novel it is today. Lewis will discuss honing the book through editing, from addressing tense issues throughout the stream-of-consciousness narrative to reworking scenes and lines to make a more cohesive structure. Jeremiah will describe how Snow Creek Press emerged as a direct result of his collaboration with Louis Lo Praeste on Capernaum and what the plans for the press are in the future.

About Capernaum:

Capernaum spans one man’s turbulent childhood in the bucolic rural hills of New Hampshire to the morning of 9/11, his decision to join the war in Afghanistan and his awkward homecoming. Louis D. Lo Praeste examines the ravages of post traumatic stress from war and abuse with sensitivity and dark humor through Atticus Brunna's sardonic narration as he struggles toward redemption and comes to terms with the inevitability of death. Through Atticus's memories the reader encounters the demons of addiction along the broken road to recovery, and discovers the futility of channeling regret into violence. As Atticus navigates a blighted landscape of unhealthy family relations and fractured friendships to work out his own salvation, he finds that an act of forgiveness does not always take the shape we want or expect it to.
